Aaron Novlan
Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Aaron grew up with Southern Alberta as his backyard playground. Like many kids, he was immersed in community sports—baseball, hockey, swimming, skiing—but beneath it all was a deeper pull toward wild spaces. With roots in Northern Saskatchewan, Aaron’s family cherished time spent under the stars, around campfires, and chasing Northern Pike and Walleye on remote lakes. Those summer trips with his father and grandfather planted a love for fishing and the outdoors that never let go.
After years spent in the fast-paced hospitality industry, Aaron found his time for outdoor pursuits slipping away. But in 2008, his father introduced him to something that would reignite it all: fly fishing. One guided father-son trip was all it took. That day marked the turning point—spin gear was left behind, and a fly rod became the only way forward. From that moment on, Aaron was all in.
Since 2009, Aaron has worked with Canada’s National Blood Bank—a role that not only reflects his commitment to serving others, but also allows him the flexibility to chase fish, light, and mountaintops whenever he can. If it swims and has an adipose fin, Aaron is likely out there hunting it with a fly rod in hand.
When he’s not casting to trout across Alberta—from Rocky Mountain House to the Crowsnest—you might find him behind a camera lens, tying up flies at his bench, or trekking through snow-covered ridgelines in search of summit views. His fly fishing adventures have taken him far beyond provincial borders as well, with rod-in-hand travel through the Pacific, the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and even Africa.
Aaron has spent his entire career serving people—and nothing brings him more joy than sharing his passion for fly fishing with others. Whether you’re new to the sport or chasing your personal best, he’s ready to make your day on the water one to remember. And if you’ve got a story to share, you can count on Aaron to listen—and match it with one of his own.
