The Dancing Ricky Foam Stone Fly is a highly buoyant, durable, and effective pattern designed to imitate large stoneflies. This foam-based dry fly is a must-have for anglers targeting trout on the surface. Designed for maximum flotation and visibility, the Dancing Ricky excels in fast-moving water and turbulent currents.

The Recipe

Here’s what you’ll need to tie the Dancing Ricky Foam Stone Fly:

  • Hook: Umpqua U106 Size 6
  • Thread: 140 Denier
  • Overbody: 2mm Foam Tan
  • Underbody: Ice Dub
  • Underwing: 2mm Foam Golden
  • Flash: Midge Flash Pearl
  • Wing: 1mm Transparent Foam
  • Overwing: McFlylon
  • Overbody: 2mm Foam Brown
  • Indicator: 1mm Foam Orange
  • Legs: Brown Round Rubber Barred
  • Antenna: Brown Round Rubber Barred

How to Tie the Dancing Ricky Foam Stone Fly

Follow these steps to tie this high-floating stonefly imitation, referencing our 60-second how-to-tie video:

  1. Secure the Umpqua U106 Size 6 hook in your vise and start wrapping the 140 denier thread along the hook shank.
  2. Attach the 2mm tan foam overbody at the rear, leaving excess for later shaping.
  3. Create the underbody using Ice Dub for added texture and flash.
  4. Tie in the 2mm golden foam underwing, followed by midge flash pearl for a subtle shimmer.
  5. Secure the 1mm transparent foam for the wing, then add McFlylon for a realistic overwing.
  6. Lay down the 2mm brown foam overbody and tie it in securely.
  7. Position the 1mm orange foam indicator on top for high visibility.
  8. Attach the brown round rubber barred legs and antennae on each side.
  9. Whip finish, trim excess foam, and apply a small drop of glue for durability.

How to Fish the Dancing Ricky Foam Stone Fly
