Fishing Hatch Chart

Red Deer River (Upstream of the Dixon Dam to Innisfail)

  • Early Season (March-April): Midges, Blue-Winged Olives.
  • Late Spring (May-June): Caddisflies, Stoneflies, Pale Morning Duns.
  • Summer (July-August): Grasshoppers, continued Caddis and PMDs, Terrestrials.
  • Fall (September-October): Blue-Winged Olives, Streamers.

Bow River (Entering and Leaving Calgary to Carseland Weir)

  • Early Season (March-April): Midges, Blue-Winged Olives.
  • Late Spring (May-June): Caddis varieties, Stoneflies, PMDs.
  • Summer (July-August): Bankside Grasshoppers, more Caddis, Terrestrials.
  • Fall (September-October): Blue-Winged Olives, Streamers.

Old Man River (Freestone Section and Tailwater)

  • Freestone Section: Stoneflies, Caddis in late spring/summer. Hopper patterns in summer.
  • Tailwater Section: Consistent Midges, Blue-Winged Olives in spring/fall. Summer brings Caddis, PMDs.

Crowsnest River (From Crowsnest Lake to Old Man Dam)

  • Early Season (March-April): Mainly Midges, early Blue-Winged Olives.
  • Late Spring (May-June): Caddis, Stoneflies, PMDs. Salmonfly hatch occurs, offering exceptional dry-fly fishing.
  • Summer (July-August): Continuing Salmonfly hatch early July, followed by Caddis and smaller Stoneflies. Terrestrials important.
  • Fall (September-October): Blue-Winged Olives, Streamers.
